“Teen suicide is the third-leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24, surpassed only by homicide and accidents, according to the U.S. center for disease control prevention”(Suicide). This quote demonstrates the need for attention to this subject suicide is real and affecting young Americans. A few ways teen suicide can be avoided to save lives, is by accepting people for who they are, stop bullying, and make the teen feel like they have somebody that there for them. Teen suicide is an extremely important and sensitive topic, which is brought about by various means of abuse depression.
Physical Abuse includes any other form of abusive treatment that hurts the child, such as burning. And finally, physical abuse includes the neglect of a child’s physical needs, such as food, clothing, or proper housing. Some parents reach their breaking point and begin to physically hit their child such as slap or spank their child as a means of discipline. It is now widely agreed that physical punishment constitutes abuse if actual injury occurs to the child, or if any marks on the skin are left, such as bruises or abrasions. “Some teenagers cope with being abused by becoming abusers themselves and becoming self-destructive or suicidal. Sexual intercourse is another form of sexual abuse and is another example of a way in which teens lives can be poorly influenced” (Murphy 13). Sexual abuse includes any kind of inappropriate touching or sexual fondling, oral contact, or intercourse. Sexual abuse also includes forcing a child to watch adult sexual activity.
Teenagers struggle emotionally with low self-esteems, feeling of worthlessness, or a low opinion of themselves. They do
not feel confident, and can easily become humiliated or embarrassed. They can also feel as if they are failures. Sometimes this leads to bullying. There are many different types of bullying the first is physical because children tease each other at varying ages which can sometimes be deemed as part of growing up, but other times teasing can be seen as bullying. “Bully-related suicide can be
connected to any type of bullying, including physical bullying, emotional bullying, and cyber-bullying, or circulating suggestive or nude photos or messages about a person. It could also be related to the tendency of students who are exposed to suicide to consider suicide themselves.” (Bullying). Some bullies physically attack people. Others tease and pick on their victims all the time, making them feel lonely, frightened, and depressed. Often it is so severe that death seems like the only way out. The second type of bullying is emotional bullying which occurs when a person's mind has broken down where he/she cannot think of anything happy. It is a sign of major depression. Emotional bullying happens among adults and children.
Another group of people who sometimes take their lives are homosexuals. Some reasons homosexuals want to commits
suicide is because of the way they feel emotionally; getting teased, and picked on because they like people with the same sex as they. Most people think that it is nasty to date the same sex, but it makes them happy. “Coping with anti-gay attitudes and hostilities putting gay teenagers in a group at risk for suicide unfortunately, some gay teens feel that it is better to commit suicide than to face who they really are. Many gay or bisexual teenagers realized that they were different from their heterosexual peers when they were very young some do not realize it until they are in their teens, or older. Many teens are pressured by their parents and society’s biases against gay people; they become critical of them and think that something is wrong with them” (Murphy 8).
The third type of bullying is Cyber-bullying which refers to internet bullying. Cyber-bullying is a form of teen violence that can do long lasting harm to young people. Bullying statistics show that cyber bullying is a serious problem among teens. “Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying.” (Bullying). Cyber
bullying involves using technology, like cell phones, along with the internet to bully or harass another person.“Cyber-bullying leads to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Once things are accumulated on the internet, they may never disappear. Many cyber bullies think that bullying others online is funny.”(Bullying ). Cyber bullies may not realize the consequence for themselves for cyber bullying. Cyber bullying affects many adolescents and teens on a daily basis.
Teenage depression is not just bad moods and occasional melancholy. Most people who commit suicide have depression.
Depression can and will affect everybody such as people of every color, race, economic status, or age because these are the things that people worry about the most. “Studies have pointed out that the rate for suicide and suicide attempts are between 5 to 20 times higher for drug users than general population” (Suicide).Teen drugs abuse may be accompanied by teen depression and possible teenage suicide. Some people do not realize the role that drug abuse contributes to all attempted suicide and those who have completed suicide.
Drugs can kill those who abuse them in two general ways: by overdose taking more of the drug than they supposed to, and by means of committing suicide. Drugs are the most dangerous substances and they can lead to death. Even the valium drug has been noted as the drug that produces unwanted suicidal thoughts in some people (Teen). Drug abuse is one of those things that can really affect the chemical balance in the brain, intensifying feelings of depression and sadness. Sometimes teens feel so depressed, and so overwhelmed with life, that they turn to drugs to help them feel better. This is known as self-medicating, and it can lead to
teen drug abuse. This drug abuse can, in turn, lead to increasingly severe depression, which if not treated, can result in teen suicide (Teen). When a teen commits suicide, everyone is affected; love ones, friends, teammates, neighbors, and sometimes even those who did not know the teen well might experience feelings of grief, confusion, guilt, and the sense that if only they had done something differently, the suicide could have been prevented by support, and love.
Help and prevent teens from committing suicide. Teen depression can be treated. There are many things you can do to help. Start by learning the symptoms of depression and expressing concern when you spot warning signs. Talking about the problem and offering support can go a long way toward getting a teen back on track.
